Interpersonal Support
Individuals, Couples, Friends, Co-workers, and Beyond
The longer I do this work the more I realize the root of much of our suffering is relational. Though a variety of symptoms might bring someone into my office (anxiety, grief, substance abuse, etc.,); more often than not we can connect a thread back to some type of relationship distress. This might look like lack of connection with a romantic partner, a yearning for deeper connection with friends, a struggle to get needs met in the work place, or a percolating sense of loneliness. When I engage individuals and couples in values work I often hear that relationship, community, and partnership are top of peoples’ list.
While I do offer support for couples, families, or any dyad looking to enhance their connection and communication skills, I can also work with you one on one. In my office we can do the courageous work of exploring what’s been getting in the way of you having the relationships you want to have in your life (i.e. avoidance of unwanted feelings and sensations like anxiety, worry, shame). Through our lives we learn what causes us pain, and then skillfully avoid that pain. Avoiding pain within relationships is logical, but at times what we’ve done to stay emotionally safe, can get in the way of our capacity to connect deeply with others. The therapy office can be the ideal place to do relationship work because therapy is inherently relational! You and I will forge our own unique relationship, giving you space to practice the skills and concepts we discuss in session. We’ll be able to explore in real time your emotional and cognitive barriers, and practice vulnerability together.
If you’re a pragmatic individual, like myself, you might be wondering how truly useful such work might be in your life. Perhaps your career is incredibly important to you, along with leadership. I consistently receive feedback from my clients that skills around vulnerability, courage, and direct communication have contributed to more effective leadership, increased productivity at work, deeper motivation, and a better work life balance.
